What makes a song timeless?  The one that you just can't stop playing?  The one that is permanently lodged in your head?

It's a song that speaks directly to your soul.

Led Zeppelin has several songs that fit this criteria, but the one that always gets to me is "Kashmir."  You can hear what the city looks like and what the people must be feeling just from the music.

"Oh let the sun beat down upon my face..."

And when Robert Plant starts singing those magical word--well it's is truly an amazing song.

Credit to the underlying structure of this song goes to John Bonham's drumming.  This is yet another example of his later work with Zeppelin when he allows a song to breathe by playing less.  Page also plays relatively sparsely and all of this restraint opens up space for Plant's lyrics to tell the story of their travels.

The understanding of human spirit that Kashmir evokes is one example of what I'm looking for in music from the 21st century.

There are other examples and I'll discuss some of them later.  In the future, I'll also talk about song structure, hooks, craftsmanship (quality of the sound recording), and a band's ability to play their own music live (no lip synching allowed here).
